The day after the publication of a conversation between Billy Corgan and Kevin Parker, Rolling stone released another addition to their Musicians on Musicians series. This time they have Phoebe bridgers talk to Metallica drummer Lars ulrich. It might sound like an odd combination, but Phoebe said she got into Metallica in grade school, after hearing them in a Playstation 2 game. “I think Metallica is a pop group,” she says. “A lot of metal is just metal to be metal – but Metallica writes real songs.”
She even speaks for the defense of 2003 St. Anger, calling it “a great record. It might have been the first Metallica album I’ve heard.”
“This record had a very, very different composition,” Lars replies. “During those few years, it was all about being open with each other, not playing by rules. I’m glad we did.”
Phoebe and Lars also discussed their mutual love for Motorhead, with Phoebe telling the story of Lemmy Kilmister’s reference in “Smoke Signals”. “It’s a true story,” she said. “I was on a road trip with my drummer and we were listening to the radio. They were talking about Lemmy’s death [in 2015], and I was like, “Lemmy was alive?” I was like, ‘Oh, my god damn it. It’s crazy that he lived all this time. So he died twice. Sometimes I always assume that the people who are known to live hard are gone, and that was just a funny wit. We spent the whole road trip screaming and making playlists. “
“I listen to a lot of Motörhead,” she continues, “a lot of Metallica. I immersed myself in the world of Slayer. And then, strangely late for me, I got super in Nine Inch Nails.”
“You can’t deny Trent and his talent,” Lars replies. “It’s crazy.”
“It’s one of those musical influences that don’t seem very obvious to me in my music,” says Phoebe, “but I hope it will with this next album. I kind of visited it with Punisher, but not that harsh. I also have an apathetic voice, and I feel embarrassed that when I scream I sound like musical theater. I don’t have a metal style “Aaaah” scream – I just have a [sweetly] “Yeah” when I sing loud. “
The idea of Phoebe Bridgers material influenced by Nine Inch Nails sounds very exciting to us!
