Phoenix Fire fights gas line fire near 7th Street and University

PHOENIX – Phoenix firefighters worked to take control of a large fire near 7th Street and University Drive.

Crews were called to the scene around 4 a.m. Sunday to reports of flames and smoke coming from under the 7th Street bridge.

Upon arrival, the teams found 20- and 30-foot flames fed by a 10-inch main gas line that somehow ruptured, according to Phoenix Fire officials.

Southwest Gas was called to the scene and secured the principal who arrested the flames.

The firefighters were able to operate the flexible lines quickly and efficiently to protect the exposures in the vicinity of the combustion.

There are no reports of injuries and an investigation is underway to determine the cause and origin of the fire,

The area should be closed for several additional hours.
