PHOENIX – The Phoenix Mercury will finally be able to play a playoff game on their home turf.
The Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Lakers have agreed to move their preseason game Wednesday a few hours forward so the Mercury can welcome the Las Vegas Aces to their home ground at the Footprint Center in downtown Phoenix in Game 4 of the WNBA semifinals.
The Suns and Lakers were initially scheduled to play at 7 p.m. PT, at the same time the Mercury and Aces were scheduled to start. Instead, the Suns and Lakers will give the green light at 3 p.m. The Mercury and Aces game will stay at 7 p.m. and will air on ESPN. It was not clear where the Mercury would have played had the Suns-Lakers’ announcement not been moved.
The Mercury’s are no stranger to the fact that their playoff games have already moved from the Footprint Center this year. Their first round match was played at Grand Canyon University due to a concert with musical artist Maluma, and they will be playing Game 3 at Desert Financial Arena in Arizona State because Disney on Ice is scheduled. Sunday at the Footprint Center.
“There were a lot of moving parts and a number of groups including the NBA and WNBA, the Lakers and their local broadcast partner, and ESPN who had to work together to make this happen,” Jason Rowley, president and CEO of Suns. Legacy Partners, LLC, said in a statement. “Ultimately, all parties should be proud to be a part of this historic dual program.”
While Mercury’s Game 4 will be part of a dual program in that two games will be played back to back on the same pitch, fans will need to purchase separate tickets for each game.
Suns guard Chris Paul bought a block of 500 tickets for Sunday’s Game 3. According to a statement, Paul’s tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at a exchange table outside the Desert Financial Arena starting at 10:30 a.m.
The Mercury-Aces series is tied 1-1.
