In recent years, the gap between the flagship iPhone and Android brands has narrowed considerably. While the makers of Android used to copy to copy all the features introduced by the new iPhone models, the dynamics has changed a lot today. Nowadays, some Android devices offer such convincing features that it leaves Apple in the unusual position of catching up.
For example, the ability for devices such as Google Pixel and Huawei P30 Pro to capture photos in poorly lit environments is a shame on the iPhone. The P30 Pro in particular is so skilled at capturing details in dark environments that it looks like magic.
That said, it is far too early to lift the mobile photography crown on the P30 Pro. After all, taking pictures in dimly lit environments is simply one of the many measures to compare smartphone cameras. It can be argued that the ability to capture stunning photos in decent to well-lit environments is a more instructive criterion, since this is where most of the photos tend to be taken.
In light of this, people at PhoneArena recently decided to confront the iPhone XS with the P30 Pro and Galaxy S10 + to determine the flagship cameras that take the best photos in normal daytime environments. The methodology was interesting to the extent that PhoneArena took pictures with the above three cameras and put them online, without any identification information, so that users could vote.
And when the dust dissipated, Apple's iPhone XS came out victorious. What is particularly interesting about the results is that the Huawei P30 Pro has been hit hard by the iPhone XS and Galaxy S10 +. In fact, the Huawei P30 Pro has not won any round of the contest.
The important result is the very low score obtained by the Huawei P30 Pro: often, it got less than 10% of the votes, which shows that the images that it produces are not as friendly as those of Galaxy and from the iPhone. In other words, we have a winner, but the biggest news is that the loser was so far behind.
While many analysts have called the Huawei P30 Pro a better camera to date, these results show that the reality is not so simple.
This is an important point and one thing to keep in mind when evaluating the capabilities of a particular smartphone camera.
You can see a full overview of the photos used in the test here. Suffice it to say that, as incredible as the P30 Pro camera in dark environments, it's hard to ignore the weaknesses of the camera during the day.
