They have always appeared in public together as a family in the years between their separation and divorce – here they are with William and Harry in 1994. It was also the year Charles admitted he had an affair, claiming that he had remained faithful until the relationship “became irretrievably broken down, we both tried.”

Diana lost her HRH status after the divorce and her title was renamed Diana, Princess of Wales.

The princess died from injuries sustained in a car crash in Paris a year later. She would have been on good terms with Charles before his death.

According to Tina Brown’s book, “The Diana Chronicles,” released in 2008, the couple became friends after the divorce, although Diana would still have feelings for the prince. The claim was never officially confirmed.

“Charles made a habit of visiting her at Kensington Palace and they would have tea and some kind of sad exchange,” Brown wrote, according to Elle. “They even laughed together.”

“It was really calming, the boys were older. They were talking about their philanthropies. And she had accepted Camilla. One thing she finally did was really understand that Camilla was the love of her life, and he didn’t. ‘There was just nothing she could do about it… But she told me over that lunch that she would get back to Charles in the blink of an eye if he wanted her, ”Brown wrote.
