The Desert Sun newspaper reported that other photos released over the past two weeks appeared to show the singer near wind turbines generating electricity in the Palm Springs area of California.
Joshua's trees are protected in Joshua Tree National Park and the Mojave National Reserve, as well as under certain city and county ordinances.
