Netflix pulls back the curtain Shadow and bone – and revealing a premiere date, to boot.

The streamer announced Wednesday that his adaptation of the Grishaverse novels by author Leigh Bardugo will debut on Friday, April 23. And based on the collection of first look images below, the series will match the epic feel of the book.

“These photos offer a glimpse into the vast, textured world that Leigh has created in her books,” says showrunner / EP Eric Heisserer. “We worked tirelessly to create a lived-in atmosphere for fictional lands like Ketterdam and Ravka, with languages, uniforms, mottos and invented artistic choices, from set design to costumes.

Shadow and bone takes place in a war-torn world where, according to Netflix, “the little soldier and orphan Alina Starkov (played by English actress Jessie Mei Li) has just unleashed an extraordinary power that could be the key to the liberation of her country . With the monstrous threat of the Shadow Fold looming, Alina is torn apart with everything she knows to train as part of an elite army of magical soldiers known as the Grisha.

Shadow and bone takes place in a very different fantasy world, ”says Bardugo, who also serves as the EP. “Think of Imperial Russia, not Medieval England, repeating guns instead of great swords. It’s a story about people who have been told how much they don’t matter, proving what they do. And it was amazing to see this story take shape on such an epic scale, the battles, the magic, but also the relationships between the characters.
