Authorities in California rushed to contain a large oil spill off the coast of Orange County that occurred when a ruptured pipeline sent at least 126,000 gallons of crude into the water.
Officials were investigating whether a ship’s anchor could be the cause of the rupture over the weekend and said on Monday the size of the spill could reach 144,000 gallons of crude, which reached shore and state parks. With oil spills entering wetlands and reserves, Gov. Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency to help with cleanup efforts.
