Photos: The best cosplay of Comic Con 2021’s low-key opening day

Like anything generally fun, indoors and crowded, Comic Con canceled its annual four-day fan fest last year due to the pandemic. Yesterday, however, the Javits Center was once again teeming with Spideys, Thors, Marios, Peaches, Venoms, Wonder Women and tons of other amazing cartoon / anime / video game / pop culture characters that I didn’t recognize as the 15th. NYC Con finally came back with … well, with something between a bang and a whimper.

Capacity restrictions made the usually crowded aisles and atriums sometimes feel almost empty. Proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test for under 12s is required for entry, and masks are mandatory indoors. But after a wasted year, the dedicated cosplayers and their oglers weren’t going to let pandemic protocols spoil the party.

“I love it!” said Michelle Ford, who came as Mira from Aquaman in an amazing jellyfish robe that took two months to make. “I come to Comic Con every year, it’s literally the highlight of my year, and I love hitting it hard. Last year I took my 2019 costume and made a transform video of cosplay from home, but it’s MUCH better. I love the people and the interaction, it’s priceless. “

Manhattanite Alex Is Crafting, who always wears a knitted or crocheted suit, agreed. “It’s amazing to be back,” she said. “Having people here who recognize who I am and who are here in disguise with other people is so much fun.” On Thursday, Alex wore her knitted Wonder Woman outfit, which she made in ten days – her most complicated creation, Zelda of 2019, took her 700 hours – but plans to arrive as a different character every day.

On top of all the cosplay, Comic Con is also about commerce, and the huge space is filled with vendors selling toys, collectibles, original artwork, clothing, and accessories. You can also purchase celebrity photo ops or autographs, and content creators from all media are on hand to promote their upcoming releases.

Comic Con will be at the Javits Center until Sunday, and badges are still available.
