The Boeing 737 has been much talked about recently since two fatal accidents involving the latest model of the aircraft, the 737 Max.
But even if the Max has been on the ground for six months, while Boeing is trying to repair a dangerous flaw in a jet plane, the sky has always been crisscrossed by the old models of the 737.
In fact, if you have flown a domestic commercial flight in the last 50 years, including the last six months, there is a good chance you had a 737 flight.
That's because Boeing has sold a ton. Since August 2019, the plan builder has ordered 15,155 orders since 1965, when the jetliner was unveiled for the first time. It delivered the 10,000th of these aircraft in April 2018, a 737 Max 8 (currently grounded) to Southwest Airlines.
Despite the missteps and tragic consequences of Max's initial design, the 737 family has proven to be a loyal workhorse for airlines around the world, ranging from long-haul carriers like Delta, which include aircraft as a small part of its fleet, to low cost airlines like Ryanair, which uses 737s for its entire fleet.
Although the 737 seems to be able to continue flying in the years to come, well after its 70th birthday, Boeing will have to prove to his customers that he has corrected the problem with Max and that he has learned enough from this episode to prevent this from happening again. The rival family of Airbus A320 chokes with 14 789 orders until August. Boeing having failed to sell a single Max for more than five months, as customers wait to see how the airline corrects the plane, it is urgent to restore consumer confidence.
Let's take a closer look at the incredible story of the Boeing 737 in 54 years.
