Piers Morgan talks to Smollett: "Truth is the only thing that has been lynched"

The former CNN host and current editor of DailyMail.com at Piers Morgan commented on the Jussie Smollett affair when he appeared Thursday in "Tucker Carlson Tonight", attributing what happened to "Trump Disorder Syndrome" and the "culture of victimization".

"Well, that was the perfect storm, right?" Morgan said to Carlson. "This is where the" culture of the victim "that you have so brilliantly articulated meets the trump syndrome derangement, this disease that has afflicted so many particularly liberal celebrities."

"You had greed as motivation. … He wanted to become a celebrity victim, as you said. He wanted people to feel sorry for him, loved him, retweeted him. But he also wanted to use the prism of his hatred for Donald Trump and all the things Trump was behind, "added Morgan.

Morgan appeared on NBC's "The Celebrity Apprentice", presented by Trump before being elected to the leading position in America.

At the beginning of Thursday's show, Carlson blamed the political left for promoting "the culture of victimization," which he said contributed to Smollett's alleged hoax.

Smollett was released on bail Thursday after being arrested and charged with disorderly conduct for filing a false police report. He claimed to have been attacked by two pro-Trump white men who poured him with bleach, called him homophobic and racist insults, and then passed him the rope in his neck.

On Thursday morning at a news conference, Chicago police said the Smollett attack was an elaborate hoax, expected because Smollett was not happy with his pay in the "Empire" series.

In his remarks, Morgan commented on those who tried to find excuses for Smollett in the media or on social media.

"He is not mentally ill. He is greedy. He needed attention, Morgan said. "Many US media outlets have taken such an anti-Trump lead that they are prepared to suspend journalistic integrity and credibility in the way they have told this story by believing every word of this type."

He added: "The only thing that has been lynched is the truth."
