The Allied Pilots Association has called on American Airlines to find “alternative ways to comply with the Executive Order made available to professional pilots” so as not to cause massive layoffs and unpaid leave following the announcement from President Joe Biden in September forcing large employers to require vaccinations or weekly tests. .

“Some APA members cannot get the vaccine for documented medical reasons, while others are reluctant to get the vaccine due to concerns about the potential for career-ending side effects,” it reads. in the September 24 letter.
“All of these members are still able to perform their duties as professional pilots,” the letter continued. “Forcing these pilots out of their jobs, rather than offering viable alternatives, will have negative consequences for their families and the airline industry as a whole.”
The APA on Wednesday hoped it could negotiate exemptions despite the company’s impending deadline, saying it “fully expects American Airlines management to continue its historic practice of negotiating with the APA over issues related to the implementation and impact of the COVID-19 vaccination mandate announcement.
American Airlines, along with several other major airlines, said they would fully comply with the mandate’s goal of vaccinating all employees. The deadline for staff to submit proof of vaccination is November 24, the day before Thanksgiving.

While Biden’s vaccine mandate has been embraced by many large companies, some on the right have pushed back on the concept, with many GOP-led states, such as Florida and Texas, banning the use of vaccine passports.
There have been more than 44 million cases of COVID-19 in the United States, and 187.2 million people are fully vaccinated against the disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
