Pit swallows car in Philadelphia, worsens due to ruptured water pipe – NBC10 Philadelphia

What was already shaping up to be a perilous day on the road due to snow and rain got worse for a driver whose SUV was swallowed up by a big sinkhole in Philadelphia.

The hole appeared on the 5500 block of N. 11th Street in the city’s Logan neighborhood and dragged the car down. The problem was compounded by a broken water line that sent gushing streams of water through the air, and then by heavy snow that started falling later.

The SUV does not appear to have sustained any major damage. Police said it appeared the car was parked and no one was inside when the sinkhole appeared.

Police at the scene blocked the road as they investigated and attempted to exit the car.
