PITTSBURGH – The Steelers didn’t have to look very far for their new offensive coordinator.
The team is expected to promote quarterbacks coach Matt Canada to the offensive coordinator, a source confirmed to ESPN.
Known for their creativity in gameplay and design, Canada has been the Steelers quarterback coach for just one season, but has plenty of experience at the college level.
Canada has spent time as an offensive coordinator at LSU, Maryland, NC State, Wisconsin, Indiana and Pittsburgh, among others. He was also the interim head coach of Maryland in 2018.
While Canada led the Panthers’ offense in 2016, Pitt led the country in red zone touchdown percentage (82%) and scored at least 28 points in 12 games of the regular season.
He also worked with Steelers running backs coach Eddie Faulkner at NC State, Wisconsin and northern Illinois.
Canada had been a candidate to open the position of offensive coordinator of the Miami Dolphins. NFL Network first reported that the Steelers were looking to Canada to lead the offense after Randy Fichtner’s contract was not renewed.
Canada’s return could signal that quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is back for the 2021 season as the veteran is said to be familiar with attacking and coaching style – big factors in the later years of his career.
