In director Domee Shi’s upcoming Disney / Pixar aimitated function Turn red, life is hard enough for a 13-year-old girl named Mei Mei who is trying to adjust to her teenage years and keep her grades in school. But unbeknownst to her friends or most the people who know her, the biggest thing she hides is her uncontrollable ability to transform into a huge red panda when stressed.

For a child who is trying to find some independence from his authoritarian mother, Mei Lee (Sandra Oh), the whole spontaneous transformation poses an obvious challenge for Mei Mei (Rosalie Chiang), who is just trying to do her homework in a new trailer for the ravishing Pixar movieWhen Mei Mei realizes her mom can’t just let her stay during the day while she’s at school, she can’t help but panic in the middle of her math class, unleashing her powers in a blast of pink smoke.

While there is only a tiny bit of Turn redThe story being teased in the new trailer, what you can see in the short clip is how much work has gone into creating the fine details that make many characters in the film feel like to be living, organic people. The same thought process that made sure Mei Mei Red panda the fur was made lush and luxuriously seems to have been similar hair and fabric textures on other characters, to give them a wide range of distinct physical appearances.

Considering how low-key Mei Mei’s ability is, it will be interesting to see how she manages to hide it from her friends who don’t know, but it’s more than likely that in Turn redit’s the end, she said to herself a way to make everything work in his favor.

Turn red hits theaters on March 11, 2022. What do you think of the new teaser?
