Pixels have always had a considerable number of problems, which has made some phone enthusiasts mistrust them. We have even dedicated an unofficial bug tracking tool for Pixel 3 here on Android Police to monitor problems. The Pixel 3a and 3a XL being far from the first attempt of Google in the manufacture of smartphones, we hoped that many of the wrinkles that hindered the previous models disappear now. It seems that this is not the case, as many users report that their new devices are shutting down randomly.

The problem concerns both the standard version 3a and the XL version. Stops occur unpredictably day and night when the device is not being used actively. When this happens, the screen will not turn on anymore and users must perform a hard reset by pressing the power button for about 30 seconds. Once this is done, they can continue to use the phone until another random stop occurs.

Some users checked if a third-party application was the cause, but even when they used their device in safe mode (leaving only proprietary software to run), their phones would turn off randomly . A user also speculated on whether the bug was related to WiFi because the problem only occurred when they were connected to their home network, but this case is too isolated to be sure it is a good problem.

Although this appears to be similar to the Nexus 6P early-closure debacle (where affected customers have been compensated), I do not think this is related. On the 6P, shutdowns usually occurred when the battery was running out of power and you did not have to perform a hard reset to restart it.

For the moment, no solution is known. Users return their devices hoping that new devices do not display this behavior. Fingers crossed to say that this is the only disappointment more important than Pixel 3a can offer, while we have enough of the league of problems with those of the range Pixel.
