Pixel 5 and 4a 5G stock down on the US Google Store

Compared to previous generations, the rollout of Google’s 2020 phone line has been much more phased given global events. The stock of Pixel 5 and 4a 5G on the US Google Store is now fluctuating, a sign that the supply could be limited or close to the end.

Update 7/9: Since Friday, the models “Google fi” and “Unlocked” Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G are out of stock in the US Google Store. Only the Verizon variants remain, although that was also briefly OOS last weekend.

Refreshing the setup page sometimes shows them as available, but many potential buyers find that shipping is delayed for several weeks, currently in August. It is still unclear whether the phones are on the verge of being discontinued or if there are supply constraints.

Update 7/2: The situation continues because two weeks later the only Pixel 5 models available in the US Google Store are the Just Black variants for Verizon and Google Fi. This is because the latter operator lists the phone as “out of stock” in both colors.

Meanwhile, the Pixel 4a 5G for Google Fi and unlocked are also gone. The only model remaining is the mmWave Verizon variant. The accessories are also reduced.

It is still unclear if this is permanent or if the inventory will return. Either way, fluctuations make it difficult for people to add to cart, and if they are successful, shipping times are quite delayed.

Original 6/17: On Thursday night, the unlocked Google Fi Pixel 5 is listed as “out of stock”. You can only buy the Verizon model from the US Google Store. The Pixel 4a 5G sees the same status.

That said, the inventory did return briefly over the course of that evening only to disappear again after a short while. (If you’re trying to buy a phone, keep refreshing the setup page and you might be able to add it to the cart.) This fluctuation is normal when the Google Store stock is low. Supply is normal in international Google Stores.

The main product pages always say “Buy” in the upper right corner. It is not clear if the phones are no longer in production or if there is currently no inventory, but more are in the works. In the first scenario, Google will eventually gray out the button and go to an “Out of stock” status. We have contacted the company for comment.

It would be highly unusual for the Pixel 5 and 4a 5G to be dropped so soon, leaving the Pixel 4a as Google’s only phone. There doesn’t appear to be any inventory fluctuations for Google’s popular $ 349 mid-range.

Then again, the Pixel 4 and 4 XL are out of stock (August 5, 2020) long before last year’s successors are ready.

COVID-19 is most likely the cause of the limited availability, as manufacturing and supply chains continue to be affected. For example, Google’s next mid-range phone is seeing a more limited rollout as a result. According to Google, the Pixel 5a 5G will launch around the same time as the Pixel 4a, which debuted in August 2020.
