The Pixel 5 and the LG Wing don’t have much in common – aside from perhaps the fact that neither will sell very well – but both phones are going to get an upgrade. linked to 5G. FCC documents say both Google and LG have been granted clearance for phones to access the new 5G n77 band released as part of the C-band auction. With nothing more than one software update, both devices can connect to the new 5G frequency once US operators start using it.

We spotted the change in FCC filings last week, and today PC Mag’s Sasha Segan confirms that the FCC has granted its blessing, allowing both the Pixel 5 and the LG Wing to remotely activate the feature to their convenience. Apparently, Band n77 support doesn’t require any hardware changes other than what both phones ship, just a software update.

Oddly enough, the Pixel 4a 5G doesn’t appear to have been included in the fun, even though it shares many of its specs with the more expensive Pixel 5. the docs just aren’t released yet – the ones we have for the Pixel 5 and the wing were held up for a few weeks before they were released.

While we still don’t know exactly who “won” with the recent C-Band auction, indications are that Verizon is somewhere near the top. We’ll find out for sure in March. There is no word yet on when Band n77 support will be rolled out to devices. (We’ve reached out to Google for more info, but it’s probably too early to tell.) No matter which carriers end up using it, Pixel 5 owners can always rest easy knowing their phone will have access. at the new 5G frequency, no hardware upgrade required.
