The latest software update for the Google Pixel lineup has recently started rolling out to users. The update includes a host of connectivity, camera and stability improvements across the range, as well as performance optimizations for the Google Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G. These optimizations have dramatically improved the gaming performance of Google’s latest flagship, according to recent reports.

When Google rolled out the first stable version of Android 11 for its Pixel devices, some users noticed that the graphical benchmarks dropped significantly after the update. According to HotHardware In testing, the Pixel 4 XL and Pixel 4a were very successful in terms of graphics performance. Since the launch of the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G with Android 11 preinstalled, we had no way of verifying whether the phones were suffering from a similar issue as well. however, Anandtech noted that the Pixel 5 significantly underperformed similar devices with the Snapdragon 765G chip. This has led many to believe that the Android 11 update was the culprit.

In the April 2021 update, the changelog mentions some “Performance optimizations for certain graphics-intensive applications and games.” Andreas Proschofsky from The standard tested the Pixel 5’s GPU performance after the update using 3DMark, and found that the results are now 30-50% better than before. According to Recent tweets, its Pixel 5 scored around 2278/2260 for OpenGL / Vulkan testing in 3DMark Sling Shot Extreme before the April update. After installing the update, the phone scored 3286/3083 in the same test, which is a substantial improvement. Andrei from Anandtech possesses also confirmed that the update has “Essentially doubled” the performance of its Pixel 5. We assume that the Pixel 4a 5G will see similar gains, given that it is also mentioned in the official changelog.

At the moment, we don’t know the exact cause of the regression in GPU performance. We don’t know if there is an issue in the Android 11 update that is specifically causing this issue or if Google has made a mistake somewhere. We’ll make sure to let you know as soon as we know.
