Pixel 6’s under-screen fingerprint reader revealed

We already know the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are on the way. We know the makeover Tensor processor, capable of translating another language in real time and quickly editing high resolution photographs. Google too confirmed that it would add a fingerprint sensor under the screen, similar to the one recently launched in the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3. And now we know what the fingerprint sensor will look like, sort of.

Hiroshi Lockheimer, senior vice president of Android, notably sent a Tweeter apparently sent by mistake which included a screenshot of where the fingerprint sensor will be integrated into the Pixel’s interface. We do not know which pixel model the screenshot is taken from, but a closer look indicates a 1440x screen resolution of 3200, which seems to match the next Pixel 6 Pro.

As for the fingerprint sensor under the screen, it appears to be placed a little lower than the midline, making it accessible to both right and left thumbs. A tipster said it appears to be around the same area where it is placed on the Galaxy S21 Ultra.

Lockheimer appeared to originally post the image as a tribute to the new Material You upcoming styles Android 12. The next version of Android will extract a color palette from your wallpaper and automatically apply it to typography and other system elements for a dynamic look. Android 12 is currently in its public beta. It recently achieved platform stability, so APIs and system behaviors have been finalized – and it’s stable enough to run on a new device like the Pixel 6 Pro.

The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are expected to be officially announced in the coming months. We already have know what they will look like—Google opted for a tricolor aesthetic this time around, rather than the color slab we saw in the latest generations of Pixels. We also know that there will be a “camera strip” housing a multitude of lenses, including a wide and ultra-wide camera. Were encouraged by what we’ve seen so far, and Pixel leaks and rumors are certainly adding to the hype.
