Pizza Hut is launching a new Detroit-style pizza in locations across the United States in what is considered its biggest launch of the year.

Typical of Detroit style, the pizzas are rectangular with a thick crust, cheese and tomato sauce. Pizza Hut says it has tested eight different versions of the sauce, which is only available on the new pies. The new menu item comes in four versions: Detroit Double Pepperoni, Double Cheesy, Meaty Deluxe, and Supremo, which comes with Italian sausage and vegetables.

The pizza chain spent a year developing the dish after customer requests, she said in a press release, testing more than 500 variations before landing on the final version. Several were tested in the Midwest prior to national release.

“Countless hours have gone into testing and perfecting every detail here to create our vision for Detroit Pizza,” said David Graves, Brand Director of Pizza Hut. Prices start at $ 10.99.

Pizza Hut has introduced several other new items over the past year to boost traffic during the pandemic. It relaunched its original Large Stuffed Crust Pizza across the United States to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its stuffed crust. He also distributed rings of stuffed crust for free to customers in some stores.

The channel has also jumped on other trends over the past year. In November, he announced a partnership with Beyond Meat to create a plant-based sausage pizza. And in December, he launched the “Triple Treat Box” with breadsticks, pizza and mini cinnabon rolls.

The pandemic has hit the restaurant industry hard, but pizza sales have skyrocketed. Yum Brands, which owns Pizza Hut along with Taco Bell and KFC, beat expectations with third-quarter profits in 2020 with $ 283 million in profit, up from $ 255 million in the third quarter of 2019.
