KALISPELL – Valley Recycling in Kalispell is doing its best to prevent Montana's landfills from growing rapidly.
Operations Director Mike Smith told MTN that a pilot plastic bottle recycling program had been launched at Valley Recycling. He said that plastic recycling had stopped a few years ago due to the lack of public interest, but that the factory is now ready to try plastic recycling and asks for help from the community.
Located in Kalispell, near Highway 2 West, the pilot program is for clean plastics of category 1 or 2 only. Plastics 1 and 2 are generally soft drinks, bottled water and milk pitchers . The type of recycling is usually located at the bottom of the bottle or under the cap.
Smith tells MTN that if people recycle bad plastics or dirty plastics, Flathead Valley recycling must throw them into the county dump.
"Every little gesture we avoid at landfill means that they will not have to grow so much earlier. They just expanded a few years ago. So we are safe for a while, but every small amount of waste stored in landfills fills them up a lot faster, "says Smith.
Flathead County Recycling will evaluate this pilot plastic recycling program for the next three to six months.
If successful, the program will continue.
Smith says this program is open to anyone in Montana who wants to use it.
