The publisher and developer Panic has announced the opening of a new portable gaming console – the Playdate.
The new handheld will cost $ 149.99 and will ship in early 2020 with limited stock. The Playdate has a black and white non-backlit screen, a directional pad, A and B buttons, and a rotating crank that can be used by games.
Although details are rare, the game will come bundled with twelve independent games, and subsequent games will be downloaded (at no extra cost) on a twelve-week "season" of various developers like Katamari DamacyKeita Takahashi, Bennett Foddy and others.
The first game revealed is that of Keita Takahashi Crankin's Time Travel Adventure. Here is an official text:
This game uses the crank exclusively to control the flow of time, back and forth. Your goal? Give Crankin 'a rendezvous with Crankette while avoiding an ever-growing series of ridiculous obstacles – obstacles are not affected by time control. Will Crankin 'arrive at his appointment on time? Stockholm-based Teenage Engineering has designed the Playdate. The black and white display with a resolution of 400 × 240 is described as "extremely sharp and clear" and has no grid lines or blur. Again, there is no backlight, so you must bring a lamp, as in the good old days.
Additional details such as integrated processor, RAM, storage, future gaming seasons, etc. are not yet revealed.
