The Playdate handheld does not have an official release date, but it is available for preorder now on the official website. Playdate pre-orders cost $ 179 or $ 199 for a bundle with a protective case.
Unlike some recent hardware (Nintendo Switch OLED, PS5, Xbox Series X, etc.), the Playdate will not sell. The first 20,000 units ordered will ship in late 2021. These orders have all been fulfilled, but you can still pre-order a Playdate for shipment in 2022. You must pay for the handheld immediately, but you can cancel before the Playdate will not be shipped for a refund. Each customer can order two Playdate consoles.
$ 179
If you just want the handheld, you can pre-order the Playdate for $ 179. It comes with a USB-C charging cable. Shipping costs were not disclosed, but will likely vary by region.
$ 199
For $ 199, you can get the Playdate with a protective case that wraps around the device to keep it safe when not in use. The flip lets you keep it connected even while you play. The blanket will also be sold separately for $ 29.
The Playdate was originally revealed in 2019. The console offers brand new indie games designed exclusively for the Playdate. It has a 2.7-inch screen, 4GB of flash storage, and 16MB of RAM. With a D-pad and two face buttons, the Playdate has a small crank on the side that doubles as a control.
Playdate’s game release schedule will be divided into seasons. All 21 games in Season 1 will be free and release over a 12-week period from launch. The Playdate Stereo Dock, a speakerphone and Bluetooth support, will be available to order at a later date. To learn more about the upcoming handheld, check out our hands-on Playdate preview.
