Player Rating: Fulham 1-2 Manchester United

Here are the player ratings for Fulham vs Manchester United. Let’s just assume that everyone loses a point during those first 10 minutes.

David de Gea: 5/10

There wasn’t much he could do for the goal. Has not been requested several times. Did his sweeper keep track of the only time it was needed.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 6/10

It’s hard to fault him for playing Lookman just because he was leaning the wrong direction. Going really well. His final ball isn’t all of that but it’s not news to anyone.

Eric Bailly: 4/10

Not his best game. I never bothered to even try to take Fulham’s center-forward when he ran between the center-backs and the flag didn’t rise. Had a bunch of nervous moments.

Harry maguire: 5/10

I don’t know why there was such a big gap between him and Bailly on the first one. Didn’t miss this header in the box as long as he had no idea where it was and was deliberately pointing it in that direction.

Luke Shaw: 6/10

I got on and off the pitch again. Does a good job of scavenging to force a much harder shot from Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

Fred: 8/10

He held his position very well in front of the full four, which allowed Pogba to do Paul Pogba’s things, while still finding time to do Fred’s things.

Paul Pogba: 8/10

There were two Pogbas in this match. Sometimes he wanted to be fancy and he had problems. When he kept it all simple, he was sensational. And then he went and won the game for United.

Bruno Fernandes: 6/10

I don’t know what Bruno was doing for the first 19 minutes of the game but he was not in this football game. Then a switch seemed to flip in his head and he was sensational for the next 10 minutes, creating a goal and forcing a good save during that time. But other than that explosion, it struggled to affect the game.

Anthony Martial: 6/10

Without confidence right now. He continues to do a lot of things well, he just doesn’t score goals – which is only a problem because that’s kind of what forwards are judged on. He looked strangely like he had never played with Luke Shaw before.

Edinson Cavani: 7/10

Has never stopped moving all night. His predatory instincts earned him a huge equalizer and he forced a great save that could have put United 3-1 right after Pogba’s goal.

Mason Greenwood: 6/10

Contributed more to the building game than it usually does, which was nice to see. He kept his breadth very well in the offensive phase, which is good for his teammates, but not so much where he is going to be most effective.

Marcus Rashford: N / A

Scott McTominay: N / A

Nemanja Matic: N / A

Director

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: 6/10

Gave us the pair of midfielders Pogba Fred that we were dying to see. It’s good to give Rashford a rest. There will always be a reason to start Bruno Fernandes, but at some point you have to put it down. United weren’t at their best – that Martial, Cavani, Greenwood before three still feel bad in many ways – but they managed to grind it down. It was a lousy game but it is January and most of the games at this time of year are lousy; In the end, United pulled it out and got three points. This is what you have to do in these games.
