The bosses of Valheim aren’t the only thing getting a buff in the latest Viking game update, as the introduction of Vulkan support for Windows gamers means your gaming PC strength see an increase in performance. Unlike its DirectX 12 counterpart, Vulkan is designed to have less CPU overhead, allowing the game to run more efficiently.
In fact, the patch notes explain that using Vulkan “might fix some random GPU driver-related crashes,” but that doesn’t mean it will work wonders, as Valheim is still firmly in Steam’s Early Access program.
Processors that are showing their age will benefit the most from running the API, as it gives the component room to breathe, but that doesn’t mean you can’t increase fps by running it on the best CPU. On the GPU side, you shouldn’t worry about compatibility either, as Vulkan runs on most modern graphics cards and the system requirements by Valheim recommend at least an Nvidia GeForce GTX 950 or an AMD Radeon HD 7970 to work anyway.
To activate Vulkan and try it out for yourself, all you need to do is right-click on Valheim in your Steam library, head to properties and type in -force-volcano in the launch options field. If you have any issues, just delete what’s on the field and try restarting.
Some people on Reddit are seeing a dramatic increase in performance, with Vulkan achieving over 30fps more than DirectX 12. Others don’t see a noticeable difference to mention or their setups don’t work well with the new API, causing crashes there. where there were none before.
So, should you be playing Valheim using Vulkan? It’s worth a try considering it’s so easy to set up and restore if something goes wrong. At best you will see your frame count climb higher and at worst you will have to put things back as they were before.
