Netflix has made it clear that they are preparing to enter the gaming world, recently hiring Mike Verdu, a veteran of EA, Zynga and Oculus, to lead their gaming division. Word is, Netflix could start bringing video games to their subscribers as early as next year, and it looks like they might have a pretty big partner – PlayStation.
Recently, dataminer Steve Moser claimed to have found several rather interesting files in the Netflix iOS app – a logo for “N Game”, a shark fin icon (the Netflix imitation game would be codenamed “Shark”) and … images of the PS5 DualSense controller and Tsushima’s Ghost.
Netflix’s gaming feature goes by the current working name of “Shark” and is represented by this image in their iOS app: A Shark Fin. Could an image of PS5 controllers and Sony’s Ghost of Tsushima (director’s cut coming August 20) indicate a partnership with $ SONY? CC @HedgeyeComm $ NFLX pic.twitter.com/FLghlRlu20

Of course, we don’t know why those PlayStation images were in the Netflix app code. It may be nothing! That said, could this be the first clue of a Netflix-PlayStation partnership? Teaming up with the world’s largest streaming platform could potentially be a great way for Sony to immediately become competitive with Xbox Game Pass. We also have to take into account that the two companies are already working together, as Netflix owns the first streaming rights to all of Sony Pictures’ movies, including the upcoming Uncharted movie.
For now, we don’t really know How? ‘Or’ What Netflix plans to ship games. Some have suggested that they simply go offer downloads rather than full game streaming, although that would be an odd choice for a business built entirely on streaming. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
What do you think? Is a Netflix-PlayStation partnership in progress? Would you be excited if that was the case?
