PlayStation's PSVR headset did not win over the world, but the PlayStation manager said the company had big plans for its VR console.
Shawn Layden said Game Informer that the next ten years of development of PSVR will be dramatic, but it gave no details on the evolution of growth. Instead, Layden compared the future of game development to his past, recognizing dramatic growth in areas such as virtual reality, augmented reality, e-sports and even mobile games. This kind of spectacular growth will only continue and it's something that Layden believes is affecting PSVR.
As an example, he used the growth of smartphone development, like many Android and Apple devices marketed since the first iPhone 3G in 2008, to examine what could happen to PSVR if the technology VR continues to evolve.
"Similarly, you are watching PSVR right now, none of us will be able to imagine what it will look like, but the change will be as dramatic," Layden said. "You can not get to 5.0 until you've done 1.0. It's just the nature of the thing.
Layden used old school Nokia phones to illustrate the problem he is having with some people with PSVR. Sony has sold only 1.3 million PSVR devices in 2018 alone, which is above its competitors Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. But compared to the Sony PS4 console, which has sold 91.6 million units since its release in 2013, the PSVR is selling much more slowly. Layden is paying attention and waiting for what should be a device. He sees PSVR as part of the 1.0 technology – something that is in its infancy, but customers want perfection right away.
Nevertheless, he has high hopes for PSVR – and games in general – as the sector continues to grow. The game is no longer in its infancy; This is one of the most dominant forms of mainstream entertainment and Layden believes that continued investment will only help accelerate its development.
"We went from the third cousin of entertainment to one of three brilliant stars," Layden said. "It can be said that depending on how you do the calculations, the most important impact is financial."
