Shortly after Akamai released their update, ThousandEyes released their situational analysis. “Although brief, the scale of the outage impacted many sites and applications, ranging from gaming sites to the major banks, airlines and others that operate Akamai’s CDN service,” the company said. cloud intelligence.
According to ThousandEyes, the disruption affected Akamai’s Edgekey Domain Name System (DNS) service – think of it as a virtual switchboard operator that connects your request from a browser or other network device – preventing users reach the desired sites stored on Akamai’s content delivery network.
“DNS is a critical first step in achieving web property and although Akamai’s CDN service does not appear to have been affected, it was inaccessible to many users during the incident,” he said.
Akamai subsequently confirmed ThousandEyes’ diagnosis that at around 12:46 p.m. ET “a software configuration update triggered a bug in the DNS system, the system that directs browsers to websites. This caused an outage affecting the availability of some customer websites. The outage lasted for up to an hour.
