Earlier this year, Sony’s apparent decision to shut down PlayStation 3 and Vita stores was all the rage among fans. Sony has finally turned the corner, but it will soon be very difficult to buy new games in stores anyway.
As spotted by Kotaku, buried on the PlayStation support page is a notice that the PlayStation Store on Vita and PS3 will soon no longer accept credit cards or PayPal. It won’t make the library completely inaccessible – it will still be possible to load your wallet through devices like a desktop – but it will make it considerably more inconvenient.
To purchase PS3 or Vita games from PlayStation Store, you will either need to purchase a gift card or use the wallet system through Sony’s website. You can also use any funds you add through your PS4 or PS5.
Even now, it’s not the easiest task in the world to access PlayStation Store on a Vita. If you’ve enabled two-factor authentication, you’ll need to listen to a separate song and dance just to log in. You’d think PlayStation Vita owners have suffered enough, but Sony’s old device continues to find new ones beyond the grave.
If you can successfully connect to your Vita or PS3, there are plenty of great games that are hard to find anywhere else, including a plethora of PS1, PSP, and even PS2 games. Many are hard to find elsewhere and are worth picking up if you can.
