Although you have been able to purchase digital PSN download codes from retailers, Sony is now closing the door next month.
Since the rise of digital games purchases, Sony, Microsoft and even Nintendo have made digital purchases of games in physical stores such as Walmart, Best Buy and Gamestop. This means that I would theoretically be able to buy a digital code, take it home, then grab it on PSN, Xbox Live or the Nintendo eShop, and download the game. However, Sony will only offer digital games directly from the PlayStation Network.
A memo was recently sent to GameStop stating that after April 1st, retailers will no longer be able to sell download codes for PlayStation titles. Although this note was sent to Gamestop, it indicated that all other retailers would be affected.
In addition, the memo stated that customers who pre-ordered the digital version of a title on GameStop will need to upgrade to a physical drive. There are some exceptions though. Past days and Mortal Kombat 11 will be available as numeric codes one week after their release date.
This could be a little bad news for some, however, there is still some good news. As digital download codes disappear, you will still be able to purchase currency cards for PSN at retail stores.
Of course, this decision will lead to negative reactions among consumers. However, I do not blame Sony's decision to take further action to completely eliminate retail stores from their process. It just means that Sony will get more money when it has to digitally buy securities in its store. However, the disadvantage is that Sony will most likely have full control of the pricing of digital downloads, which is a little scary in my opinion.
