Plex’s new Atari Retro Arcade subscription is awesome

Plex fair added a new level of subscription to its live TV and media streaming services: Arcade Plex, a cloud-based gaming service like Amazon Luna and Google Stadia, but entirely focused on retro arcade games.

The streaming company has partnered with Parsec, another streaming company known for cloud gaming, to create a library filled with Atari classics like Asteroids, Centipede, Missile Command, and more. Plex also supports classic game ROMs, so if you have a few you can add them to your Plex Arcade library.

“We pitched the idea for years, and since over the last year we’ve been looking for new ways to have fun and entertainment, we finally decided to make it happen.” Plex announced in a press release.

Using Parsec’s low-latency streaming technology, the Plex team could easily offer fully playable game libraries within their service.

Plex says its new arcade is a passionate project, and still a work in progress, but should it get a lot of followers, there’s definitely room to expand the service later. You can try Plex Arcade for free for seven days. After that he ‘s $ 3 per month for existing Plex Pass subscribers or $ 5 per month for non-subscribers.

Plex Arcade requires a Windows or macOS Plex Media Server (sorry Linux users; no support for you right now), but he’is easy to install and create a new game library. Plex Arcade supports Android (mobile and TV), iOS, tvOS, and Chrome, and you can use any Bluetooth or USB game controller that is compatible with your favorite gaming platform, although Plex recommends using a Sony DualShock 4 or Xbox One controller. For Chrome-based games, a keyboard will also work. You will also need to link your Plex account to your Parsec account, but this is part of the Plex Arcade setup. (Parsec accounts are free.)
