Over the past few days, Pokémon fans have shared photos of their tattered Pikachu plush toys online. That is, I’ve had a really good time lately indulging in a bounty of Warped Pikachu.
It all started when the Twitter account Out of Context Pokemon shared a screenshot of a post it seemed like a showcase made entirely of weird Pikachu toys. Polygon couldn’t find a source for the images, but whether or not it was a legitimate store, people in the responses embraced the fluff.
Any of those Pikachu would shame Mimikyu. Some, with their odd proportions, look like imitations. Others look like the result of a horrific lab accident somewhere and miss entire parts of the body. But many are just worn out and spent their time as beloved plush toys! Regardless of everyone’s supposed “flaws”, they make me want to pick them all up and love them.
While the post in itself is great, what makes it even better is that in the responses people started flooding the original tweet with photos of their wonderful little babies. It turns out that anomalous Pikachu are oddly common.
Perhaps the most horrible that I found was this Pikachu, whose head turned completely upside down like an owl. It will truly haunt me in my dreams for years to come.
Some are just very popular, just like any Pikachu should be. I love this one because I swear he looks endlessly with his big black eyes.
Perhaps this one was torn by a pet? I don’t know, but its current state is oddly relatable.
He seems to be trying to sell you illegal goods.
After examining these works of art, I suddenly remembered my own childhood toys. So, I asked my mom to send me pictures of my wonderful little goblins. The large one pictured in the main image of this item is a permanent fixture in our basement and entryway, and welcomes everyone who comes to my family.
I have this other orange Pikachu my mom ordered from a random Amazon seller. I’ve only had him for four years and he’s already broken a seam in his butt. Sadly, I had no choice but to lock it up in a storage unit – on video calls with story sources, too often they just wanted to talk about the giant Pikachu behind my head.
Leaving that aside, I really appreciate my plush Pikachu and the responses from people online. Whichever way you slice it up, Pikachu has been the best-known mascot of one of the biggest media franchises since the turn of the millennium. We see Pikachu as The Pokémon Company wants us to see it. These stuffed animals are awesome, because I love to see their beloved symbol all warped and melted down.
No matter what people say, I’ll always love those cursed little Pika babies.
