On June 5th, Nintendo's latest Pokemon Direct revealed many details for the upcoming Pokemon Sword and Shield games. Among the new titles features, one of the most notable additions are the Dynamax transformations, which increase the physical scale of Pokémon battles to gigantic heights.
In the same way as Mega Evolutions and Z-Moves, Dynamax transformations are temporary moves that you can activate in combat. This increases the size of your Pokémon and increases their overall power, turning all their movements into Max Moves. "Max Moves is powerful, and some may even trigger additional effects," writes Nintendo in a press release. "For example, the maximum Normal movement, Max Strike, has the additional effect of reducing the speed of a hit opponent." The maximum movements that the player can use that the Pokémon can use are determined by the type and types of movements known before Dynamaxing. "
Like Mega Evolutions, Dynamax transformations can only be activated once per battle. The transformation only lasts three turns too. So you have to be strategic to decide when to activate it. You are not the only one who can harness the power of Dynamax. Gym leaders will use the transformation on their most powerful Pokémon, adding a new obstacle to defeat them in battle. You can also meet Dynamax Pokemon in the new Wild Zone of Sword / Shield – a place where you will meet wild Pokemon in an open world, much like in Pokemon: Let's Go Pikachu / Eevee.
To fight these giant wild Pokémon, you and up to three other players (or NPC-controlled coaches) join forces. These new types of battles call the Max Raid battles. They will allow your team of coaches to face a Pokemon Dynamax in a difficult fight that will require coordination. Only one of the trainers in your group will be able to energize their Pokémon to match the wild giant Pokémon. You will have to choose wisely. These wild Pokemon Dynamax vary according to the region and the weather. You will have to explore the whole area to beat them and catch them all.
