Pokémon McDonald’s Happy Meals would sell and resell

The Pokémon Company is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2021, and McDonald’s is jumping into the action with special Happy Meals featuring Pokémon cards and toys. However, it seems adults are buying them before anyone can access them.

Starting February 9, McDonald’s Happy Meals will include a 25th Anniversary McDonald’s Special Edition Pokémon Trading Card Game Booster Pack. Each pack will contain four exclusive cards representing each region’s starter Pokémon, Pikachu, and more. Stickers and toys are also available in special Happy Meals.

There are 50 collectible cards in total with standard and foil versions of each card, and they all have the Pokémon 25 logo on them.

The value of old Pokémon cards has apparently increased every week. The limited edition cards are only sold with Happy Meals, and it looks like adults are heading to their local McDonald’s to purchase an exorbitant number of meals just for the cards.

Social media accounts describe attempts to buy a Happy Meal for the cards, but have been refused to buy one because of some customers.

“@McDonalds went for a happy Pokemon meal and was told they had no more, someone bought 50 in one order …” A Twitter user wrote Tuesday, “Why can all these companies advertise when they don’t deliver when it’s time to buy. Take a lesson from Xbox and Sony, stop scalpers from ruining your shit!”

Some collectors also document their escapades on platforms such as Tik Tok.

Why do these customers buy Happy Meals? For some, it is to resell on the secondary market at an inflated price.

A quick search on sites like eBay for McDonald’s 25th Anniversary Pokémon Cards gives you listings selling unopened packs for at least ten times the amount of a Happy Meal.

A McDonald’s Happy Meal sells for around $ 3 depending on the food you order. Some resellers try to sell a pack of cards for up to $ 30, and others sell them in bulk for $ 100 or more.

There are also reports that some people are selling the Pokémon Cards still in the original shipping boxes.

@McDonalds @ Pokémon Hopefully you will do some form of inventory control for your promotional Pokemon cards, as some of your inventory is sold in sealed boxes, which means they don’t even reach your stores 😳 Even though the same thing happened with Tim Hortons Hockey. Newsweek has contacted McDonald’s for comment.

In January, The Pokémon Company announced plans to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the franchise, which featured McDonald’s Happy Meals and musical performances by singer Katy Perry.

Pokémon Day is set for February 27.
