Pokémon Sword and Shield makes sporting battles even more exciting

Pokémon games can be stereotyped, which can make it difficult to use when you have played for 23 years.

Take the gym experience. This is where you solve an enigma, face weaker coaches, and then hire the gym manager to earn a badge that proves your mastery. This whole ordeal has become a little predictable.

Sword and Shield makes the gymnastics battles cool.

Pokémon Sword and Shield will be released for Switch on November 15th. They represent the eighth generation of the main series of these role-playing games. The franchise has sold more than 300 million copies since its debut in 1996, and Sword and Shield will probably be Nintendo's best seller for the holidays.

I had the chance to do a 20-minute demonstration at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) this week in Los Angeles. It takes place in a gym on the theme of water. At first, it's a typical Pokemon experience. I walked around, solved a simple puzzle involving switches that turned on and off stunts blocking trails and fought coaches.

The main event

Things felt a lot more different once I fought the head of the gym, Nessa. My character has entered a giant arena full of spectators. It was a long way from previous games, where you only had to walk to the gym leader and just fight with them. Instead, I watched a cinematic ride the fight in this giant stadium. This gives the impression that the upcoming battle is more like a major sporting event. This is special.

Dynamax also helps the gym battles to stand out. This is a new feature for Sword and Shield. By pressing a button, you can enlarge a Pokémon. The effect lasts only a few turns, but the beast is stronger and has access to more powerful movements while being enlarged.

Nessa also uses Dynamax. Seeing his Pokémon become so big that it practically broke out of the stadium gave rise to a fight that seemed much more cinematic. I almost felt bad sending my little Pokémon against his monster.

I worried about Dynamax when I heard about it for the first time. The system looked like a flash-over-substance technique. But now that I know you can only use the maneuver at special events such as battles at the gym, I feel much better about it. Limiting this gives Dynamx a special feeling.

Sword and Shield marks the first time that a game in the main series of Pokémon is on a Nintendo home console (although the switch also serves as a laptop). I hoped it would mean that the presentation and film quality of the series would be significantly improved. Until here everything is fine.
