Pokemon Sword & Shield: Random encounters could be a thing of the past

On June 5th, Pokemon Direct unveiled a new trailer and more details on Pokemon Sword and Shield. One of these new details was a little fuzzy; The trailer and the following clips showed Pokemon roaming the outside world, similar to Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee, but we also witnessed a random encounter in tall grass. So, are there random encounters or not?

From what we can say up to now, it seems that random encounters are for the most part, if not totally, parties. The Direct has shown a variety of wandering Pokemon in the outside world, much like in Let's Go games. You encounter these wild Pokémon in an area called Wild Zone, which designates the extent of nature between towns; In the wilderness you will encounter different Pokémon depending on your location and the weather. You start fighting with these Pokémon by meeting them, although some chase you once they've spotted you.

The Direct also showed a more typical encounter of wild Pokémon in tall grass. In the end, you also have some control over these encounters. A small exclamation point appears in the grass, indicating that a Pokémon is present, and you can then start the fight by meeting it, as with Pokémon that physically appear in the outside world. It's hard to know if there are occasions when Pokemon will attack you totally randomly and by surprise, but it seems unlikely. We asked for clarification and will update this story when we hear more.
