A recent Pokemon unite update seems to have ruined Gengar’s Hex move, often leaving the ghostly speedster unable to perform his most powerful combo.
Gengar was an absolute terror in Pokémon United games since the simplistic MOBA launched on Nintendo Switch on July 21. Although the game has only been released for a few weeks, Tencent’s subsidiary TiMi Studio Group has released a Pokemon unite update earlier this week to adjust the balance.
The patch notes were, predictably, light on the details, but dedicated gamers have since filled in the gaps with hard numbers. Gengar’s Hex (a rapid teleportation strike) was part of the affected moves, with decreased overall damage and invulnerability.
The change was intended to remedy an arguably overkill combo. Previously, by combining Sludge Bomb — which poisons opponents — and Hex — which has a reduced cooldown after damaging status-affected enemies – the Ghost-type Pokémon could practically wipe out health bars in a short time and with very little effort.

But these last days, Pokemon unite players have spoken on social media about a bug that causes Hex to deal no damage, rather than damage reduction. Some even offer video evidence that a popular strategy of Gengar based on the unique properties of the move has been ruined. Developers vaguely recognized the existence of the problem both in the game and on Twitter, but for now, the movement remains halted. Many assume that the changes to the fixes are responsible for the current bug state of the attack.
Since the Hex bug reduces his damage to zero, the move cannot be used repeatedly, greatly reducing the damage Gengar is able to deal. A few players also mentioned that they were excluded from the movement entirely thanks to a stuck recharge timer. The problem apparently resolves for some people when Hex is upgraded to Hex + at level 13, but this is not guaranteed.
There is no doubt that Gengar is one of the strongest characters in Pokemon unite when it is working properly. But as it stands, the big purple boy has been reduced to a simple Magikarp, the only one capable of crumbling until he is put out of his misery. Hoping he soon gets back on his little stocky feet.
