They have a habit of seeing icebergs floating in Greenland, but nothing so big.
A massive iceberg came right next to the distance of a football field (100 meters) from the coast on Thursday, and some residents had to be evacuated to more hilly locations.
Keld Quistgaard, of the Danish Meteorological Institute, told the Danish Broadcasting Corporation that the berg weighs between 8 and 10 million tonnes and that it is growing nearly 300 feet at above the water.
"We are used to big icebergs, but we've never seen one as big," said Susanna Eliassen, Innaarsuit Village Council Member, at the Greenlandic Broadcasting Corporation (KNR) .
According to the New York Times, only 169 people live in Innaarsuit. At least 33 people have been evacuated so far, KNR reported.
On Saturday, the giant ice flow had left the shore and was sitting about 500 meters from the village, but KNR still called it a "special situation", and the footage showed that the city was not yet out of the danger zone.
This is part of a troubling trend in the Arctic, where global warming occurs twice as fast as anywhere else in the world.
"The Arctic is showing no sign of returning to the frozen region reliably decades ago," said the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration at the publication of its 2017 newsletter on the # 39; Arctic.
Last year, at least four people were killed in Greenland when a huge wave went aground in June. Our homes were also washed away after a tsunami caused by a landslide.
Observe what happens when a flash comes off the giant iceberg hovering over the city, causing a giant wave towards the shore and gently rocking the entire mass of ice:
Of course, Greenland is not the only place that smelt of heat recently.
This summer, temperatures reached new heights in the United States, with cities suffering from sweltering heat waves from New York to Los Angeles. The Times reports that our hot nights are warming almost twice as fast as days, and this is becoming a deadly problem in North America.
