The characteristic neon is already shining. On Tuesday, the architecture pavilion of Warsaw Zodiak was put into operation. New – the old town square must be an open space for residents, where meetings, exhibitions and other cultural events will be organized.
Zodiak (located at the crossing of Wiecha) creates a building consisting of the outline of the pavilion of the old cafe and the square in front of the building. The project was created as a result of the cooperation of the capital city of Warsaw and the Warsaw branch of the SARP.
– Approaching this place, we were hopeful that it could only be restored in accordance with the existing structure. However, the building's security conditions were very bad or even threatening – says Marlena Happach, head of the Office of Architecture and Regional Planning. – The pavilion itself was created from scratch, but with the use of these preserved remains – added Happach.
– There is a chance that this place is reborn, whether it is a place where you can discuss, meet and talk about the future of Warsaw – said Warsaw President Rafał Trzaskowski at the opening . – This place is unique – he said.
Three levels, conference and exhibition space
"The reconstruction of the pavilion has made it possible to extract the most valuable elements of the original building, taking care of the details and character of the building by using very rare solutions to the current reality, such as terrazzo , and a staircase suspended in the air with prefabricated terrazzo steps resting on a beam and a railing directly released. However, a direct reference to the original elements of the pavilion, reflecting the ancient spirit of this place, is the neon sign and the mosaic that crowns the building.
The Zodiac neon with a characteristic star is already visible from the Passage Wiecha space. Originally, it was designed by prof. Jan Bogusławski and was part of a composition that would entangle the entire building of Zodiak bar. The neon reconstruction was entrusted to the workshop of Jacek Hanak, who had previously worked on the original construction.
The second element is a mosaic "Kosmos" decorating the staircase of the three-storey pavilion, designed by Magdalena Łapińska-Rozenbaum. It refers to the mosaic according to the design of Maria Leszczyńska, which originally covered the wall of the roof terrace. "The mosaic consisted of fragments recovered from the cullet of the glass prototype and supplemented by a material obtained in the same way, that is to say waste glassware.On the one hand, this solution refers to techniques and materials used by artists in the 1950s and the other promotes the idea of recycling "- reads in a press release.
Open and accessible to all
The pavilion has three levels. At level -1, there was a reading area, on the ground floor, an exhibition space was planned, designed for exhibitions and cyclical installations. In the future, there will also be a coffee shop.
On the first floor, a multifunctional room accommodating approximately 75 people was found. It is equipped with a video wall, a projector with screen and a mobile screen. You will also find a small meeting room that can accommodate a dozen people. You will find a screen for presentations and video conferencing equipment, as well as a spacious terrace.
An important element of the pavilion in the new edition is the square in front of his face. The building will be "open" instead through glazed and sliding walls, which will be moved in summer, which will connect the interior of the pavilion instead in one large space.
This weekend, the first cultural events are planned, which will inaugurate at the same time the activities of the pavilion. zodiac. The events of the program are open and free for all.
