"Today, with great sadness, we say goodbye to Witek Sobociński, the greatest Polish filmmaker, educator of many generations of filmmakers, our friend and colleague, modest, kind and humorous, we We bid farewell to the artist whose visual sensibility has been reflected in more than 70 films, among which such masterpieces as "Everything for Sale", "Sanatorium pod Klepsydrą", "Wedding" , "Death of the President" or "Promised Land." They prove the best of the versatility of his talent – said Bromski.
As he recalled, Sobociński has worked during his long career with masters such as Has, Kawalerowicz, Polański, Wajda and Zanussi. – They all pointed out that Witek was a full-fledged co-author of the films they were filming. In his work, he was not limited to painting, but he was involved in the whole process of creating a movie. He actively supported the directors, imposing their sense of jazz rhythm. His attitude towards the film certainly contributed to the consolidation of this Polish tradition of close cooperation between the director and the operator, which is found nowhere else in the world – said Bromski , adding that Sobociński had taught future operators to "make a film, not just film it".
Witold Sobociński died in Konstancin-Jeziorna on November 19th at the age of 89. The urn with his ashes buried in the grave of his family at Warsaw Powązki military cemetery, near the son of Piotr, died as a result of an attack in Vancouver in 2001 during the film "24 hours" and of the wife of Jadwiga Sobocińska.
