Legia Warsaw, in collaboration with EY analysts, accounted for the effects generated on the economy during the club's record season. The benefits, not only for capital, are in the hundreds of millions.
For the players of the 2016/17 Łazienkowska season, during which all their matches (including those outside) totaling 1.1 million people came, he had a great success. The leader of Ekstraklasa not only progressed in the Champions League, but also achieved a record turnover – 286 million PLN. It's more than 300%. more than Lech Poznań, the second on the list of the richest Polish clubs. For this season, forecasts for Legia are already lower, reaching 135 million PLN. However, other figures related to the club's activity are impressive. The new EY report shows that, during the 2016/17 season, the capitals team contributed directly and indirectly to the generation of 631 million revenues in the Polish economy (of which 142 million zlotys is a added value or contribution to GDP) and supported approx. thousand. people (519 people work in the club).
– This is the first report of this type prepared at the request of a football club – says Marek Rozkrut, partner and economist at EY.
The amount of 631 million zlotys is the sum of revenue from the club's business as a business (eg, bonuses for promotions, sale of tickets and souvenirs), as well as income generated in outside the club. These, according to the assumptions of the report, result from the so-called effects of demand and supply. What are these effects? This includes the demand for various products and services reported by the club (for example for the supply of sports equipment) or the increase in sales of companies enjoying the popularity of the team, that is to say that they win thanks to fans, for example restaurants and hotels. However, the details of the methodology adopted by EY analysts are not known.
The report also shows that the revenues of the public finance sector during the analyzed season amounted to 104 million zlotys due to taxes and premiums paid by Legia Warszawa. In Warsaw alone, the club added PLN 10.7 million in taxes to the city budget.
This is the city, emphasize the club authorities, the most benefits from the presence of Legia. The report shows that the club generated an added value of PLN 274 million and that, thanks to it, the Warsaw business generated a turnover of PLN 411 million. Another efet is the promotion of the city. Analysts have found that in Legia matches with foreign clubs in network 2-4, the number of searches for "Warsaw" increased considerably. The report shows that promoting the city on the Internet, social media and television through Legia's European competitions was worth PLN 33.4 million.
– You can look at this figure like this: it would be necessary for the city to use it to appear on the international markets – comments Łukasz Sekuła, member of the board of Legia Warsaw.
He adds that, aside from taxes, the club (currently owned by Dariusz Miodulski) pays city rent for the stadium – PLN 3.7 million. And at the same time, the annual costs of the club's activities for the city represent "only" 0.6 million zlotys. He does not hide the fact that he is hoping for greater support from the mayor and that bad relations with officials (for example, the real estate tax dispute ended this year) are now a thing of the past.
