The time comes from flying taxis – said Dr. Bernd Martens, member of the board of directors of Audi AG and president of Italdesign, presenting the prototype "Pop.Up Next" during the drone week in Amsterdam. This is a joint project with Audi, Airbus and Italedesign. The Netherlands was presented with a flying model and conducted at a scale of 1: 4.
"Pop.Up Next" it's a combination of an autonomous electric car and a passenger drone. It consists of three modules: a driving platform, a passenger capsule and a drone.
The capsule placed on the dock becomes an autonomous electric car. Raised by the drone, it is supposed to allow autonomous flight.
– Thanks to the "Pop.Up Next" vehicle, we simultaneously examine the limits of what is technically possible. The next step on this road will be to create a life-size prototype capable of both driving and flying, added Martens, quoted in the release.
Audi estimates that in the next decade, flying taxis will be used in cities. "If we succeed in intelligently dividing traffic between roads and airspace, people and urban organizations will benefit," said Martens.
