In 2050, coal-fired power plants will continue to operate in Poland – Energy Minister Krzysztof Tchórzewski said about the Polish energy plan. At the same time, he stressed that our country could afford to invest in nuclear energy.
Speaking about the PEP project presented by the Ministry until 2040, Tchórzewski said that it was a compromise between the expectation of reducing emissions from the European Commission, the guarantee of social aspirations and an evolutionary approach, for example by slowly reducing the role of coal energy.
As Tchórzewski told the press on Thursday, the most important element of energy policy is public consent, which he manages to maintain, he said. – We are in a situation where we can look ahead with more optimism – he added.
Nuclear energy in Poland
We have introduced nuclear energy into our projects because we note that "we will manage it", "that we can afford to start building a nuclear power plant".
– If necessary, it will be possible to invest external capital. I do not see any big problems here – he added.
In March 2018, Krzysztof Tchórzewski had indicated that the cost of a nuclear power plant construction project could be estimated at 70-75 billion zlotys.
In turn, Józef Sobolewski, director of the Department of Nuclear Energy at the Ministry of Energy, estimated in May that the cost of building the first nuclear power plant in Poland, depending on its capacity, is estimated at 40-70 billion zlotys.
Wind power
As stressed on Thursday the Minister Tchórzewski, "in the measure of capital necessary for the transformation of energy, we are able to cope as a Polish state, citizens, entrepreneurs and those who wish to cooperate with us ".
The Energy Minister also said that given the social approach, offshore energy is much more favorable than the energy of terrestrial origin.
Speaking of windmills on dry land, Tchórzewski said that "nobody would bother him administratively", but – referring to his discussions before the local elections, "there is no consent" to reduce the restrictive conditions for the construction of such plants.
– And looking at the atmosphere in the regions, I do not believe that any political option has decided to change – he added. According to him, the tendency to build bigger and bigger wind turbines leads to "a growing caution of the local communities".
The new mine
Referring to the European Low Carbon Strategy presented on Wednesday Tchórzewski said that he could not imagine that in 2050 there would be more coal-fired power plants in operation in Poland. Deputy Minister of Energy Grzegorz Tobiszowski added that the construction of a new coal mine would probably be decided next year, but he did not want to reveal any details. .
Minister Tchórzewski reminded that the guidelines defined in the PEP project can and must be verified in time, in accordance with the law on energy.
Asked whether the project had been consulted by the rest of the government, the minister said he was convinced of the consensus within the leadership team. "It would be difficult for the ministry to announce a draft energy strategy that would not be consulted," he said.
