The death of Andrzej Gmitruk was a blow, not only for the family, but also for the boxing community. Thursday afternoon, the funeral ceremonies started in Warsaw. At Mass in the church dedicated to Our Lady of Częstochowa, Saint Parish. Wincentego a Paulo has a lot of famous people.
There were, among others, Artur Szpilka, Izu Ugonoh, Dariusz Michalczewski, Krzysztof Włodarczyk, Albert Sosnowski, Marcin Najman. Sports Minister Witold Bańka also appeared.
After Mass, Andrzej Gmitruk was buried in Brodno Cemetery. During his last trip, the sounds of Frank Sinatra's hit "My Way" sank.
Thanks to the decision of the President of the Republic of Poland, Andrzej Duda, he received the cross of officer of the order of Polonia Restituta. The decoration was presented to Witold Bańka by his wife Andrzej Gmitruk.
Andrzej Gmitruk died on November 20th at the age of 67. The cause of death was acute circulo-respiratory insufficiency. In addition to the wife of Agnieszka, he also left his five-year-old daughter.
Gmitruk is the best known Polish boxing coach. He ran a lot of well known boxers. Recently, he worked with Artur Szpilka. At the beginning of November, he stood in his corner during the fight against Mariusz Wach. He was also expected to prepare Izu Ugonoh to fight Ali Eren Demirezen at the Tiger Fight Night Urban Jungle Gala, which was finally postponed precisely because of the death of Andrzej Gmitruk.
