Deadly accident on the 2019 Tour of Poland: Bjorg Lambrecht is dead

Bjorg Lambrecht was to be one of the candidates for the stage victory. Belgian hit his head in a concrete culvert about 100 km before the finish line. The accident occurred on a straight part of the road, at ul. Palowicka in Bełk, during the third stage of the Tour de Pologne from Chorzów to Zabrze.

The district prosecutor's office of Rybnik has opened an official investigation into the tragic accident of a cyclist during the cycling race of the Tour of Poland. Witnesses from the accident are interviewed – including cyclists in the bunch.

The Lotto-Soudal team on Twitter reported: Our Bjorg Lambrecht crashed and was taken to the hospital

When vital functions were restored, Lambrecht was transported to Rybnik hospital by ambulance. The LPR helicopter was on alert in Bełk, but the 22-year-old state did not allow air transport. Unfortunately, after being transported to the hospital, the doctors failed to save the life of the cyclist.

The cyclist was taken to our hospital in critical condition. He was admitted to the ORS and immediately went to the operating table. Unfortunately, the cyclist died during the procedure – says Michał Sieroń, spokesman for Rybnik Provincial Specialty Hospital No. 3.

In the next registration on Twitter, the young Belg team also confirmed the death of the runner. – The greatest tragedy that can happen to the family, friends and teammates of Bjorg … Rest in peace Bjorg …

This is not the only accident of the TDP during the third stage. A moment after the accident in Belg, there were more, thankfully, more collisions and less dangerous falls, among others at Knurów and Zabrze.

At the end of the third stage in Zabrze, in connection with the tragedy, the decoration ceremony was abandoned. Czesław Lang, however, announced that the Tour de Pologne would continue.

– Forty-eighth kilometer has turned out to be an unlucky kilometer, where Bjorg Lambrecht pulled off the road, no one knows why. It turns out that he falls into a deep moat. The injuries were so severe that we quickly called the helicopter and the ambulance. He was rushed to the hospital, the action of the heart was still stimulated, but unfortunately he did not survive. He's really sorry, Lang told Zabrze.

Bjorg Lambrecht

Bjorg Lambrecht, 22, is, with Remco Evenepoela, one of the most talented young Belgian cyclists. Last year he signed a professional contract with Lotto Soudal, a Belgian team geared towards the world. Ghent cyclist, he also ran until 23 years old.

In 2017, he won under 23 years of Liège-Bastogne-Liège. He was also second in other races under 23, such as the Future Tour, the Tour de Savoie Mont Blanc or the Giro della Valle d'Aosta. He won his first professional victory in the final leg of the Tour of the Fjords last year (a three-day race in Norway) beating Edvald Boasson Hagen and Michael Albasini in a uphill sprint. He has also achieved good results in the professional peloton. Among others, he finished fifth at De Brabantse Pijl – La Flèche Brabançonne, sixth at the Amstel Gold Race, fourth at La Flèche Wallonne and twelfth overall at Critérium du Dauphiné.
