"It is thought that the fire started in a fourth-floor apartment," said Clainton Murray, chief of the fire brigade.
"Fire crews helped two people on the first floor and a number of other residents were evacuated from lower floors," Murray said. "About 50 residents used a local public house as a rest center."
Firefighters were called at 0h10 (midnight GMT) and the fire was under control at 0:50 am, said in a statement, adding that the cause of the fire was not yet known.
Neighbors went on social networks to post pictures and videos of the incident.
The London Ambulance Service confirmed that no one had been taken to the hospital as a result of the incident, said the fire brigade.
