Adam Nawałka coach Lech Poznań. The previous selection did not take place in the clubs

  • Adam Nawałka has become the new coach of Lech Poznań. Historically, former coaches were not the best in the role of club coaches
  • Paradoxically, this is only good for Waldemar Fornalik, who as a selector did not achieve good results
  • Former coaches often included lower league teams at Ekstraklasa

They did not win trophies, they chose the work of the activist, they included teams from lower leagues – previous selectors usually had trouble returning to the candlestick. Since the fall of the Polish People's Republic, none of the former coaches of the Polish national team has been more successful after completing his work with the staff. Now, Adam Nawałka from Lech will try to change this fate.

Paradoxically, only Waldemar Fornalik is doing well, because the coach has not achieved good results (during the World Cup qualifiers of 2014, Poland overtook the group formed by San Marino and the Moldova, with whom she shot at Chisinau). Back in the league with poor Ruch Chorzów, he recorded very good results (in terms of opportunities), until he gave up after two years because the financial crisis has become too serious. Now he leads Piast and takes fifth place.

Worse – at least on the bench – was the result of these selectors, who managed better with the staff and presented it at the World Cup – Jerzy Engel and Paweł Janas.

The Engel Trophy

Although the first, at least as the only former promoter, won the trophy – the Cyprus Cup with APOEL. Previously, he headed the Vistula. He was close to the promotion of the Champions League, but Cracovians did not qualify for the UEFA Cup group stage and Engel was released despite the fact that his team was in the league. Then he went to Cyprus for less than a year.

– I finished working before the end of the season and I had to return to the country because of the death of my parents. Later, I became sporting director of PZPN – says Engel. – I had several proposals, but I could not take a coaching position because of my job at PZPN. There were also offers from the Far East, but I did not want to leave – he recalls. Then he tried – unsuccessfully – to rebuild Warsaw Polonia, but as president and not coach. He left the bench 12 years ago. He is currently working with UEFA.

– Club leaders know we have no influence on former activists. That's why we all prefer more docile coaches – explains Engel, referring to Nawałka's tough negotiations with Lech.

Engel did not want to accept the offers of weaker team coaches from the Premier League or lower leagues, but other previous selections had no such objections. Janas led Widzew and Bytovia – with the Lodz team, he qualified for the first division and Bytów – for the first. – I'm the only coach in the world to have won two promotions, year after year, with the same team in the first league – joking the former coach. The first time, Widzew was not allowed to play in the elite because of the old sins of corruption. Janas was worse in the first league and his last career club was Bytovia. He has also finished working as a coach. – I always get proposals, but that does not interest me. I work at the school of coaches, I go to class and I prefer a quieter life – says Janas.

Smuda's enthusiasm

Smuda, 70, has recently been working in the second division, Górnik Łęczna. Previously, he fell with this Premier League club. The bitterness of degradation, only from the 2nd Bundesliga, he also knew Jahn Regensburg, but it is difficult to blame him – he took over the team that was already at the bottom of the list. Working in the second division is not new to him because he worked there with Widzew, but he was released twice before the end, although the team ran into the table.

The coaches of our 90s team who did not have much success for her were not very good at their return to the league. They quickly gave up and finished their career before their sixtieth birthday. Leo Beenhakker is an interesting case who, after leaving the team, no longer led any team.
