WASHINGTON – Astronomers may have caught a relatively close star nibbling a planet or mini-planets
A NASA space telescope noticed that the star suddenly looked strange last year. The Chandra X-Ray observatory has spotted a 30-fold increase in iron on the edge of the star, which is 10 million years old, with pronounced attenuation.
MIT scientist Hans Moritz Guenther says that he has never seen anything like it. . He says that a simple explanation is that the star eats a planet or mini-planets. External experts say it's possible, but the evidence is circumstantial.
Astronomers have been observing the star for decades and iron levels were not high in 2015.
