The suspect is also dead, Saunders said.
Shooting victims are treated for their injuries and their conditions were not immediately known. But one of the victims – a girl – is in critical condition, Saunders told reporters Sunday night.
"I saw at least four people shot dead," he said.
The victims were sent to detention centers. City Trauma, Toronto Police Sergeant Glenn Russell told CNN.
Another witness, Jody Steinhauer, had dinner with her family at Christina, a Greek restaurant, when she heard what was going on. She was thinking about the sound of firecrackers and was told to run to the back of the restaurant.
Witnesses were transported by bus to several offices to talk to investigators, Russell told CNN.
The crime scene covered a bit of distance, said Saunders, and the police asked people to contact them with any information they might have. The detectives began processing several shooting scenes. The Ontario premier tweeted Sunday night: "My heart turns to the victims and loved ones of the horrific act of gun violence in Toronto."
